vwvan

Aha! The good old VW van reminds me of my car camping days. I camped in one of these big and sturdy campers back in Hyalite Canyon in Bozeman Montana, when the mercury dropped a few degrees below zero. If I survived that ordeal, I am sure people taking the van to Hawaii on a camping trip won’t have a problem at all.

The owners of GB Adventures rented a pop top VW camper to check out the volcanoes, beaches and parks of Hawaii. You can check out the following options while touring in the pop top.

Once you land at the Hilo International airport and rent out the pop top, the show is on the road. However, you need to remember to load up this baby with food, water, extra gas, supplies, etc. A good place to stock up the van with food is the farmer’s market at Hilo. All you have to do after that is cruise to Volcanoes National Park. If you have a National park membership, entry would be cheap, almost free.

lava

This park demonstrates the consequences of volcanic activity. Some of these features were formed here over 70 million years! This is a great tourist facility located off on Highway 11. You can just park the VW at one of the park campgrounds and enjoy the unsurpassed beauty of the surroundings. If you don’t have a camper, you can crash at the Volcano Inn for the night.

Next up, is the Punalu’u Beach Park. This black sand beach is probably one of the most picturesque beaches we have today. You can take a look at the green sea turtles while you snorkel with them. I think this is the most exciting activity for visitors.

spence

You also continue further up to North Kona, and set up your camp at Spencer beach park. It’s located off the Kawaihae harbor and has some very interesting looking lifeguard towers.

BBQ grills, shady grass and beach volleyball are the activities that you can indulge yourself into during this trip. Make sure you grab a swim suit and flip-flops on your way out.
