The 80-metre long bridge is built over a Vilcanota River in a village near Peru’s Machu Picchu. It will help cutting the journey time and opens another route for backpackers trekking the lofty Inca ruins.

The bridge was inaugurated on Saturday 24th March, 2007 in the village of Santa Teresa. It will help in increasing tourism and locals have welcomed the bridge for opening their remote area to commerce and tourism.

The cultural experts have raised an objection that increase in tourism will wreck the archaeological gem. It is also said that the rare flora and fauna in the highland jungle will also be jeopardized as more and more tourists visit the place.

UNESCO has expressed concern over rapidly expanding tourism in Machu Picchu and a delegation will be sent in April to determine whether the new bridge threatens the ruins.
