The Iguazu Falls are easily one of the top travel destinations in South America.

Shared by Brazil and Argentina, the Iguazu Falls are taller than the Niagara Falls and much vaster. Its magnificence is such that Eleanor Roosevelt exclaimed “Poor Niagara” when she first sighted these falls.

It is more of a waterfall system consisting of about 270 falls spanning over 2 kilometres of the Iguazu River. Most of these falls are about 65 kms high. Especially breathtaking is the Garganta del Diablo or Devil’s Throat. It is a 150 metres wide and 700 metres long U-shaped cliff, which accounts for about 70% of the falls water. It also marks the Brazil and Argentina border.

In both the countries the fall lies in the Iguazu National Park which are World Heritage Sites. The large number of endangered and rare species, wild foliage and thundering waterfalls makes the visit unforgettable. If you also want a taste of latin American life, stay at a hotel in the city instead of a resort.

Puerto Iguazu is the nearest city on the Argentinean side. Near this city is the airport Aeropuerto Internacional Cataratas del Iguazu; there are daily flights to this airport from Buenos Aires.

Any taxi will take you to Brazil from here, though you will require a Brazilian visa.

These falls can also be reached from Paraguay.

Many facilities like speedboat rides right up to the falls, green trails amidst the rain forest, helicopter rides (available on the Brazilian side), bird-watching trips are available.

The best time to go is from August to November.

So start the planning!
