Dumbarton Oaks is a famous 19th century Federal-style museum and research library in the hills above Georgetown, which is just a few minutes from the Mall in Washington, DC.

Started as a private collection by Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss in 1920, and given to Harvard University in 1940 it is a center for scholarship in Byzantine studies, Pre-Columbian studies and the history of landscape architecture. The library and collections include art objects, artifacts, manuscripts, and rare books.

Dumbarton Oaks encompasses an interlocking series of terraces, geometric gardens, tree-shaded brick walks, fountains, arbors and pools. There are some of the magnificent gardens on the East Coast that make up one of the most beautiful open spaces in all of Washington. If, you wish to escape hot and steamy afternoons of Washington, you can go to shady garden rooms at Dumbarton Oaks is the ideal place.

June blooms include clematis, roses, and grandiflora magnolia; July and August bring day lilies, fuchsia, gardenias, agapanthus, and oleanders. There is a Roman-style amphitheater on the right side of the Dumbarton Oaks gardens. Gardens open daily except Mondays.
