
Rio carnival Sambha dance results are out the winners this year were 5th last year. They are none other than the Beija Flor samba group. They won their 10th carnival championship Wednesday, taking home top honors for a colorful performance in a float representing the humming bird. The giant gilded hummingbird had leaping impalas and dancers in elephant and giraffe suits.

Rio’s samba parades are the centerpiece of Carnival in Brazil. Over the course of two nights, the city’s 13 premiere groups mount opulent 80-minute parades involving hundreds of drummers, thousands of dancers and lavish floats.

They were the last group to perform at the Sambadromo stadium Tuesday.
Beija-Flor means “hummingbird” in Portuguese. It literally means “to kiss a flower”, an act which catches the hummingbird’s raison d’etre mid-flight, was captured in this gorgeously lighted float.

The samba parade has made its way around the world, with a yearly parades in Japan, Denmark, London, Finland, and the United States. These are much less elaborate affairs than in Rio, but they represent the same sense of fun and community spirit.

Brazil is however unique in the world as a nation of continental proportions where nearly everyone drops everything for four days to celebrate.
