Mexican archaeologists have detected underground chambers which are believed to contain the remains of an Aztec Emperor Ahuizotl who was the last emperor to complete his rule before the Spanish Conquest and said to have died in 1502.
Using ground-penetrating radar, a two meter by two meter entry tunnel and four chambers were detected. The site lies below the recently discovered stone monolith carved with a representation of Tlaltechutli (god of the earth). There are accounts written by Spanish priests that suggest that the area was used by the Aztecs to cremate and bury their rulers.
It is said that the tomb is believed to be filled with rocks and mud and will have to be pumped. The new excavation has to proceeded slowly, in part because the water table is very high at the site. The way into the tomb is expected to be cleared by this fall.
